After studying and experimenting with many of the needed success principles and practices for over thirty years, I’ve come to this conclusion, the two most important qualities any person needs to be successful in their life and calling are:
- Commitment to learn.
- Commitment to action.
Committed learners and doers will ultimately be successful in what they are called to do.
I know, I’m supposed to save that for last so you will go ahead and read the rest of my words of wisdom, but I just felt like being a little contrary today and giving it to you first. If you are busy and need to get going, take those two thoughts with you and they really will take you far. If you want to hear a little more about how to make this work, read on.
I have now read, listened to, and talked with hundreds of high leader/achievers. They are amazingly diverse. Some have come from extreme poverty and an 8th grade education. Others have come from great wealth and graduated from the finest educational institutions in the world. Most are somewhere in-between. Some are extraverts, some are introverts, and some are middle-verts. Some have started from scratch in a blue-collar job and turned it into a multi-million dollar enterprise, others started with only their family and have built churches impacting tens of thousands of people, and still others were living in their car after going through some tragedy and today are helping thousands of people and earning a great living. They all, however, did those two things: they committed to learning and they committed to taking action on what they learned.
Jesus gave a story one time about two types of people: one person heard what Jesus taught but didn’t act on it. The other person listened and then took action. Jesus said when the floods of life came (and they always do) the one who took action stood strong, while what the other person (the passive listener) built was swept away.
No matter what you are called to do if you will commit to being teachable, to learning and to keep learning and then take action on what you learn, YOU WILL EVENTUALLY SUCCEED. There will be no obstacle too big or enemy too strong. God will back you up, people will support you, and your own character will develop to such a degree that you can keep making progress.
Both traceableness and action have to be combined with commitment, because there is always a learning curve. There are always struggles and failures along the way; but if we keep learning and keep taking action, we will eventually reach our goals.
Be encouraged today. All you have to do, foundationally, is commit to learning and doing and you will get to where you want to go.
